With summer nearing an end, high school seniors are getting ready to go back to school and are gearing up for senior portrait sessions. As a professional photographer catering to young clientele, it is extremely important that you stay up-to-date not only on trends in photography, but also on trends that are popular with the clients you photograph. Trends for senior photographs change from year to year, so knowing what’s hot and what’s not is a must.

Kevin Hammond of Kevin Hammond Photography in Chicago, IL has developed a senior portrait session called Rock the Frock that he has been offering to seniors throughout the summer. "I wanted to start driving a healthy senior business to my studio," states Kevin. "I have neighbors and friends of the family who are seniors and are willing to get together to have their photos taken in their prom dresses in an urban trash-the-dress style session. I printed an 8x8 matte finish book studio sample to keep with me to show prospective senior clients. I shot a similar type of session last year with brides at a lakefront, which was a great success, and thought the idea would transmit well to seniors."
Ross and Kammi Bothwell of Elegant Images & Photographs in Longmont, CO helped create a Senior Rock Star Tour with four other studios. "The Senior Rock Star Tour was based on an idea we developed last year," Ross recalls. "It is something that had never been done before and is a way to provide seniors the glamorous experience of being photographed like a celebrity. Five photographers including Allison Ragsdale, Dusty Volkel, Erin Cady, Dawn Gioia, Kammi, and me represented the northern, southern, eastern, western, and mountain areas in Colorado. We marketed the tour using Facebook and word-of-mouth advertising, so it was a grassroots-type campaign. We photographed fifteen seniors per tour and took them to five locations throughout the state on a party bus with a disco ball and music. The girls got their hair and makeup done and we ended up shooting for about nine hours in total during each tour. Our seniors loved the experience – the girls felt so glamorous and everyone became friends at the end of the tour. We’re planning on continuing the tour next year and can’t wait to start marketing it!"
Creativity is key when marketing your studio to seniors, so regardless of what you offer, make sure you are aware of the latest photography and product trends so you can attract the clients you want.
